Custodian
Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Library Manager, the Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, comfortable, and safe environment for library patrons. Work requires the use of power and hand tools in the performance of a variety of tasks of moderate complexity. The Custodian responds to indoor building emergencies during and after hours of library operation.
Duties:
Knowledge of janitorial methods and protocol.
Knowledge of infection control and modern cleaning methods.
Ability to quickly clean and sanitize the library.
Knowledge of basic maintenance tasks in a commercial environment.
Physical demands of position:
Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, and stooping.
Bending/twisting and reaching.
Talking and hearing; communicating with other staff members.
Far vision at 20 feet or further; near vision at 20 inches or less.
Lifting and carrying: 80 lbs or less.
Pushing and pulling; objects weighing 60-80 pounds on wheels.
Heights: Ability to climb on tall ladders to reach light fixtures, vents, et cetera.
Mental Requirements:
Communication skills: effectively communicate ideas and information.
Reading ability: effectively read and understand labeling, signage, and instructions.
Ability to comprehend and follow instructions: effectively follow instructions from Library Manager.
Time management: set priorities in order to complete the job.
Ability to multi-task and comfort working alone occasionally required.
Environmental/working conditions:
Inside work environment with some outside tasks
Janitorial work completed in evening hours prior to and just after closing.
Must be available for unexpected emergencies.
Works with various cleaning chemicals.
Must be able to be around dust while cleaning.
Education and experience:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Knowledge of maintenance and janitorial best practices.
Some previous janitorial/maintenance experience.
Fast, diligent worker.
